Frontier Technologies and Copyright

On 23 and 24 July 2024, the IP Key South-East Asia project organised the Conference on Copyright, Technology, and the Future of the Creative Industries in South-East Asia. At the event, international experts shared their knowledge on copyright protection in today’s digital environment.

On the first day, speakers from the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights of the European Union Intellectual Property Office and the Directorate-General for Communications, Networks, Content and Technology of the European Commission presented the EU’s legal frameworks on copyright. This included the Digital Services Act and the AI Act, as well as how frontier technologies like AI and blockchain are used – either positively or negatively – to promote or infringe copyright.

On the second day, representatives from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, the Society of Audiovisual Authors, the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations, and the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, addressed the impact of AI on their respective creative field. Guidelines and solutions – such as licensing and reporting of AI training materials – were also proposed as the way to ensure that human creativity is promoted and IP rights are protected while society still benefits from technological advancement.
