IP for SMEs in Latin America - new trainings available after successful completion of a cycle of webinars in 2020

In the countries of the European Union and Latin America, SMEs account for 99 % of all businesses. They are a key element of both economies. According to the EUIPO and the OECD, in the last 8 years SMEs have created about 85 % of net new jobs and provided around two thirds of the total private sector employment in the EU. In Latin America, SMEs account for 67 % of employment.

IP Key LA is aware of the need for more IP-related information directed to SMEs, to increase awareness of the benefits of IPRs for their business. Earlier this year, IP Key LA collaborated with the Latin America IP SME Helpdesk to produce a set of country-focused webinars for EU SMEs interested in the markets and IP landscapes of Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.

The importance of IP registration and protection, and its particular benefits for SMEs were just some of the topics discussed during these webinars. These webinars are now available as short online training courses to all entrepreneurs, business owners, innovators and individuals interested in doing business in these four Latin American countries.

As well as underlining how the COVID‑19 crisis has impacted SMEs operating in Latin America and the importance of protecting the innovative aspects of their business in this context, the content provides tips and tools to support SMEs in better protecting their IP rights during and after the COVID‑19 crisis.
