EUIPO Unveiled Groundbreaking Study on Economic Impact of IPR-Intensive Industries in Brazil
On 4 February, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) launched the "Study on the economic contribution of IPR-intensive industries in Brazil" at the IP Key LA Summit 2025 in Rio de Janeiro.
This study identifies IPR-intensive industries and measures their economic impact in Brazil. It aligns with recent efforts by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to quantify the importance of IPR-intensive industries in the European Union and other Latin American economies.
The study underscores the importance of IPRs in driving economic growth and innovation in Brazil and reveals that IPR-intensive industries were a powerhouse in Brazil, contributing to nearly 50% of the country's GDP and employing over 22 million people annually. These industries also dominated Brazil's international trade, accounting for 64% of exports and 84% of imports.
Key findings include:
- Employment: IPR-intensive sectors employed an average of 22.6 million people per year from 2020 to 2022.
- Economic Contribution: These sectors contributed 50.2% of Brazil's GDP in the 2020-2022 period, amounting to R$3.76 trillion.
- Trade: IPR-intensive industries were responsible for 64% of exports and 84% of imports, highlighting their critical role in Brazil's trade balance.
- Wages: Workers in IPR-intensive sectors enjoyed a wage premium, with patent-intensive sectors offering the highest premiums of 58% and 64% for the 2017-2019 and 2020-2022 periods, respectively.
- Green Technologies: Green patent-intensive sectors showed remarkable productivity, with their contribution to value-added nearly tripling from 2.0% in 2017-2019 to 3.7% in 2020-2021.
- Growing importance of Geographical Indications (GIs) and Added Value: 93% of employment in the coffee sector is concentrated in companies using GIs.
This study was coordinated by IP Key Latin America, the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC) of Brazil, and the Brazilian National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). It also received support from Al-INVEST Verde IPR to include a chapter on green patents. The complete report can be accessed on the IP Key LA and AL-INVEST Verde DPI websites.
IP Key LA Summit 2025
More than 100 representatives from 28 countries met in Rio on 4 February to discuss current trends and future challenges in the Latin American IP landscape. The IP Key LA Summit, organised by EUIPO, provided a platform for IP experts to discuss the main challenges and opportunities for cooperation between the EU and Latin America.
EUIPO will continue to promote IP protection and cooperation in Latin America through projects such as IP Key LA and AL-INVEST Verde DPI. These initiatives will support innovation, economic growth, and sustainability, and further strengthen global IP cooperation.
