EUIPO Hosts an IP Café Session in Beijing on AI and Copyright Protection

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), on 21 November 2024 and as part of the EU-funded IP Key China project and in partnership with the Copyright Society of China (CSC) held an engaging IP Café session in Beijing. The event gathered experts from the EU and China to explore the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on copyright protection and enforcement.

AI is transforming the copyright landscape by influencing how creative content is generated, managed, and protected. AI-driven tools can automate tasks such as content creation, image synthesis and music composition, raising complex questions about authorship and intellectual property. While this trend holds great potential for innovation across the creative industries, it also highlights the importance of clear guidelines and protections.

During the session, experts from the EU and China discussed critical issues at the intersection of AI and copyright law, including Copyright Protection Criteria for AI-Generated Works, Implications for Collective Management Organisations (CMOs), and Policy and Regulatory Strategies.

The discussions provided thought-provoking insights into both the opportunities AI presents and the emerging challenges it poses for copyright protection and enforcement. The session fostered an environment where participants could engage in meaningful discussions and exchange insights to address the rapidly evolving digital and AI-driven landscape.

For the EUIPO, recognised on various occasions as most innovative IP office in the world, AI is at the heart of its strategic vision, which is manifested through the creation of an AI steering group of top managers and the provision of several AI driven tools (e.g. TMview) that support both staff and users. The Office is cooperating with many other organizations, including national and regional IP Offices, EU institutions, and other strategic stakeholders, to share knowledge, exchange expertise, avoid duplication, and support the drive to innovation with AI solutions that are designed to be flexible, adaptable, and easy to share.
