Roundtable on Copyright Protection in the Digital Environment concluded in Xi´an

On 19 and 20 November 2024, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), through the EU-funded IP Key China project, co-hosted a roundtable on copyright protection in the digital environment with the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) in Xi’an, China. The event gathered leading voices in the copyright sector to discuss key issues in copyright legislation, enforcement and the evolving digital landscape in both the EU and China.

With influential stakeholders from both Europe and China, the roundtable explored and exchanged views on recent developments in copyright legislation and enforcement, focusing on the regulatory frameworks of the EU and China, as well as emerging challenges in the international landscape.

Following the opening remarks delivered by SUN Daguang, Standing Committee Member & Head of Publicity Department, the CPC Shaanxi Provincial Committee, WANG Zhicheng, Director General, Copyright Department, National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC),

Gyta BERASNEVIČIŪTĖ-SINGH, Project Lead, IP Key China, European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), discussions centred on several major topics:

  • Recent legislative developments in the EU & China: presentations on revised copyright regulations in China, as well as updates on the EU’s copyright system.
  • International issues in copyright practice: expert discussions on copyright collective management, contractual balance recalibration and insights from creative industries on digital copyright priorities.
  • Copyright enforcement in an online environment: focused sessions on online copyright infringement and enforcement with contributions from judicial experts and EU representatives.

In the closing remarks, TANG Zhaozhi, Deputy Director General & First Level Counsellor, Copyright Department, NCAC, and Dr. Roberto ESCARRÉ, Activity Coordinator, IP Key China emphasised that this collaborative effort reflects a shared vison to enhance mutual understanding and develop robust, cooperative approaches to copyright challenges in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Within the field of copyright, the EUIPO hosts pan-European databases and portals, such as agorateka, the Orphan Works Database and the Out-of-commerce Works Portal.
