The EUIPO promotes protection and marketing of geographical indications in Thailand

As an international authority on geographical indications (GIs), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) works closely with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) to promote and protect agricultural GIs. In addition, it holds the responsibility to manage the first EU-level mechanism for registration of craft and industrial GIs.

In line with its strong commitment to this mandate, the EUIPO partnered with the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand and the Thai Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) to organise a conference in Bangkok under the framework of the IP Key South-East Asia (IP Key SEA) project. The event focused on recent developments in the protection and marketing of GIs in both Thailand and the EU. Thailand stands out in the region for its well-established sui generis GI protection system, backed by over two decades of experience.

More than 90 participants attended the conference in person and online, while an evening outreach event attracted more than 300 attendees. The outreach featured a showcase of agricultural and craft GI products from Thailand and Europe, with contributions from EU Member States and the DIP supporting the display of more than 60 GIs. Interactive elements, including QR codes linking to a dedicated webpage and educational quizzes, were also provided to deepen public understanding of GIs.

The event marked a significant opportunity to promote EU GIs and underscore the advantages of a robust sui generis system for GI protection.
