The webinar on international intellectual property treaties, organised in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), successfully concluded after two days of intensive sessions. This event, held on 6 and 7 May 2024, focused on fostering dialogue among Andean countries on the challenges and opportunities of accession to the Hague Agreement and the Madrid Protocol.

Workshop for Patent Examiners from Latin American IP Offices: Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

The ‘Workshop for Patent Examiners from Latin American IP Offices: Pharma, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics’ was successfully concluded after two days of intensive training for patent examiners from the region. Held virtually on 3 and 4 September 2024, the workshop was organised by EUIPO, in the context of the IP Key Latin America project, in collaboration with the European Patent Office (EPO).

High-level study tour on Plant Variety Protection and its benefits

The activity consisted of a technical workshop alongside a study visit, which was organised in Spain. The visit was based on site tours and direct discussions with EU breeding companies, farmers, and growers.

This study visit included both theoretical and practical sessions on how the 1991 Act of the UPOV Convention benefits plant variety protection for farmers and growers. It also provided stakeholders with a platform to address their concerns and seek practical solutions through exchanges with EU experts, breeding companies, farmers, and growers.

Study on the economic and social importance of the flower industry and PVR protection for Ecuador

This study will show how the production and exportation of roses contribute to Ecuador’s economy. It will follow the structure and methodology of analogue studies carried out by the CPVO in the EU. The study should also prove the importance that the protection of IPRs has for the Ecuadorian flower industry, and at the same time the risk that inadequate protection of rights may mean for that sector.

Geographical Indications Workshop in Mexico

The activity entails a comprehensive 2-day workshop aimed at preparing Mexico and the EU for the effective implementation of their commitments in the field of GIs under the modernised FTA with the EU.

It will focus on the obligations, benefits, and compliance requirements outlined in the agreement. It will also seek to highlight the economic, cultural, and social benefits associated with GIs, emphasising their role in rural development and sustainability.

Reporting of follow-up actions to the EU Commission Counterfeit and Piracy List

The activity pursues raising awareness of IP protection and enforcement by supporting the monitoring of developments in the LA countries in relation to the online and physical marketplaces that are identified in the EC Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List.

The European Commission publishes a Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List biannually that identifies and describes the most problematic marketplaces around the world, whose operators or owners reportedly engage in, facilitate, or benefit from counterfeiting and piracy.

IP Key LA Closing Event

The main objective of this activity is to inform key stakeholders about the main outcomes of the IP Key LA second phase. Therefore, this activity will target the largest segment of IPR practitioners to reach out to specific segments of the general public, notably policy makers from government and enforcement agencies, SMEs, producers and private sector representatives, academia, and economic media, but also the public in general and, in particular, the younger generations.

On-demand support for the implementation of obligations arising from FTAs

The activity/activities provide for the possibility of undertaking ad hoc initiatives upon the request of DG TRADE.

The description and objectives of the on-demand study or assistance to be undertaken in relation to the on-going FTA negotiations, IP Dialogue or in relation to the implementation of FTA obligations will be defined in accordance with the request to be made by DG TRADE.
