EU copyright experts shared best practices in IP Key SEA Virtual Conference on Modern Copyright Protection Systems

Virtual conference on Modern Copyright Protection Systems organized by IP Key SEA took place on 8 and 9 September 2020 with special attention to the online environment's aspects. The two-day event includes presentations by EU and international Copyright Experts and national presentations by copyright policy officials from South-East Asian countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

On 8 September, Paolo Lanteri from the Copyright Law Division of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) shared his knowledge on various treaties and international agreements on copyright and related rights, laying the foundation for a better understanding of the treaties' roles in enhancing the copyright regimes of the South-East Asian countries. EUIPO Copyright Expert Gyta Berasnevičiūtė-Singh shared her insights in the second presentation on the EU legal framework, modernized copyright rules, and the practice of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

On 9 September, IP Adviser from the European Public Law Organization (EPLO) Dr. Ionnis Kikkis provided an overview of the collective rights management in the European Union in relation to the EU Directive on Collective Management, and EUIPO Copyright Expert Gyta Berasnevičiūtė-Singh gave a presentation on intermediary liability and copyright infringement in the online environment. Representatives from each SEA country delivered national presentations on the modern copyright systems in the respective countries and how the policies in place are used to ensure more effective protection for copyright owners against the infringement of their works.
