Promoting Intellectual Property and Geographical Indications in Viet Nam

On 6 and 7 June 2024, the IP Key South-East Asia project and the Intellectual Property Office of Viet Nam co-organised a seminar entitled ‘Promoting Creativity and Innovation: The Intellectual Property Law of Viet Nam’ and an exhibition of EU and Vietnamese geographical indications. The aim of the event was to highlight how the new IP Law of Viet Nam could drive economic growth and enhance the competitiveness of companies and product producers.

The seminar consisted of 12 sessions with 15 speakers from the European Union and Viet Nam, covering topics such as patents and industrial designs, trade marks and copyright. Two sessions were dedicated to geographical indications (GIs) and issues concerning IP rights enforcement in Viet Nam.

During the exhibition popular EU and Vietnamese GIs were showcased. The differences in the labelling of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Geographical Indication of Spirit Drinks (GI) were explained during the exhibition.

The event attracted around 60 participants, including representatives from the EU Delegation to Viet Nam, the Vietnamese IP Office, the South-East Asia SME IP Helpdesk and GI producers.
