Seminar on Intellectual Property for Judges of El Salvador
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) organised the ‘Seminar on Intellectual Property for Judges of El Salvador’ in the city of San Salvador on 4 and 5 November.
In an unprecedented event, this seminar developed in the framework of the IP Key Latin America project, and organised in conjunction with the National Registration Centre of El Salvador, brought together 130 public officials from this country, including 60 judges and magistrates in the civil, criminal and commercial areas, as well as prosecutors and customs authorities.
During the seminar, participants discussed into essential issues to improve the enforcement of IP rights in the region. Topics covered included the importance of IP enforcement, the structure of IP judicial systems in Europe and El Salvador, and challenges in the prosecution of IP offences, in particular the gathering of evidence and the presentation of cases. In addition, topics such as infringement of well-known trademark rights, compensation for industrial property violations, digital infringement and unfair competition were addressed. Through workshops in working groups, judges and prosecutors also discussed specific cases that facilitated a practical exchange of strategies for strengthening IP.
This event not only promoted dialogue and cooperation between European and Latin American judicial institutions, but also underlined the fundamental role of the EUIPO in its role as host of the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights.
This seminar is part of EUIPO's long-term strategy, aligned with its strategic objectives for 2030. These include optimising operational efficiency and effectiveness, improving access to the IP system, fostering respect for IP through education and awareness-raising, and ensuring the sustainability of the European network of IP offices.
