The EUIPO promotes GI protection in Kuala Lumpur

As of December 2025, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) will be fully responsible for managing the registration of craft and industrial geographical indications (GIs) at EU level and will be a key player in the promotion and protection of agricultural GIs, collaborating with the European Commission and national IP offices worldwide.

On 24 November, in the context of the IP Key SEA project, the EUIPO co-organised a conference on geographical indications in the European Union and Southeast Asia with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO).

Experts from the EU and Southeast Asia discussed how GIs are protected in their respective regions and how they contribute positively to economic growth, tourism, sustainable development, and the preservation of traditional knowledge and cultural expression. Over a hundred participants attended the conference in Kuala Lumpur and online.
