SE Asia customs authorities share best practices at IP Key dialogues

IP Key SEA organised dialogues in Viet Nam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia on 17 - 24 October for local customs authorities to share expertise on IP enforcement practices and border control measures with EU experts. The activity aimed to further intensify the level of coordination and engagement of local law enforcement authorities in curtailing trade in IPR infringing goods.

ASEAN IP officials to discuss potential regional IP academy

Representatives from each of the ASEAN IP offices and ARISE+ IPR experts will attend a kick-off meeting in Bangkok on 30-31 October to discuss a feasibility study on the possible establishment of a regional ASEAN IP academy. The participants will discuss and evaluate initial proposals for the study.

EU and local experts discuss Indonesian Patent Law

A roundtable dialogue between EU and Indonesian experts was held in Jakarta on 24 October to discuss recent developments in relation to the new patent law of Indonesia, and share international best practices on patent examination procedures. Representatives from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP) of Indonesia, European Delegation to Indonesia, European Patent Office (EPO), and IP Key SEA participated in the dialogue.

Italian producers showcase importance of IP protections to visiting SE Asia officials

The directors-general and other senior representatives from several Southeast Asian intellectual property (IP) offices met with local producers in northern Italy from 28 September to 1 October to gain a better understanding of how geographical indications (GI) contribute to economic development. Producers of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, Garda Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Apples of Val di Non guided the delegates through the unique sites, production processes and labelling that make their products immediately recognisable in international markets.

Southeast Asian IP officials to see first-hand the importance of GI protection for local business

Senior officials from several Southeast Asian IP offices visited producers of products protected as geographical indications (GIs) in northern Italy on 28 September - 1 October to better understand what GI protection does for sustainable development and economic prosperity. The activity focused on how the producers promote their GIs and the EU practices on the enforcement and control of GIs.

New client services to be considered in forum with Southeast Asian IP offices

The directors-general and other senior officials from the Southeast Asian IP offices attended a forum in Geneva on 26 September with EUIPO and IP Key SEA representatives to discuss the upgrading of services offered to clients operating in Southeast Asia. The activity aimed to improve the IP environment for businesses operating in the region through quality standards and new technologies in the national IP offices.

ARISE + IPR hosted IP commercialisation seminar at Singapore IP Week

ARISE + IPR hosted a seminar on IP commercialisation on 5 September at the IP Week @ SG 2018 conference in Singapore. The seminar entitled ‘Generating Value From Ideas: IP in the Innovation Ecosystem, Key Players and Success Factors’ focused on IP policies and best practices that foster innovation and creativity, for the benefit of the business representatives, rights holders, investors, legal practitioners, officials and academics participating with the final aim to foster regional and economic integration in the ASEAN region.

Workshop tackles online piracy and trade in counterfeit goods

The IP Key SEA team collaborated with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) in conducting the ‘Workshop on Criminal Enforcement Against Online Trade in Pirated Content and Counterfeit Goods’ in Bangkok starting on 21 August. The three-day workshop focuses on practical implementation of national policies in the area of IP enforcement in the online environment.
