The European Patent Office presents Patent Knowledge Week 2023

Patent Awareness Week 2023 will take place from 28 to 30 November in a fully digital format. Organised by the European Patent Office (EPO), this free-to-access online event promises a comprehensive presentation of patent knowledge, addressing critical issues such as data, information, knowledge and intelligence.

The event kicks off on 28 November with a welcome address from EPO President António Campinos. Keynote speakers include EPO’s Xavier Seuba, who will look at the future of patented intelligence, and Microsoft’s Sonia Cooper, who will discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on patents.

On the same day, a session on patent intelligence will look at the impact of artificial intelligence on patent search, data coverage for patent analysis, and linking patent data to other sources. Experts from the OECD, the EPO and Microsoft will discuss various aspects, followed by a question and answer session.

A highlight will be a panel discussion on the impact of artificial intelligence, with experts from Microsoft, AELEX and the EPO itself. The next day will focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups, covering topics such as the new Patent and Technology Observatory and developing IP strategies for start-ups.

Participants on 29 November will have access to parallel sessions in the afternoon, covering the EPO’s main patent information products, including Espacenet, PATSTAT and IPscore. Labs will provide a hands-on opportunity to learn and discuss information tools.

On 30 November, a deep dive into advanced aspects of patent data will be offered, with sessions on the EPO’s global bibliographic data and legal event data. Topics include Fintech and intellectual property protection, data mining for patent term adjustments and a panel discussion on the future of patent information.

The event will conclude with a focus on knowledge transfer and sustainability, exploring the development of patent information in relation to finance and sustainability. Initiatives for global innovation and support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals will be highlighted.

Patent Knowledge Week serves a diverse audience, from patent information specialists to SMEs, universities, researchers and developers, and research institutes.
