EU-China Roundtable on Copyrights in the Digital Environment with the NCAC

From 17 to 18 December 2018, IP Key China held the ROUNDTABLE ON COPYRIGHT PROTECTION AND LICENSING IN THE DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT. The event was co-hosted by the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC) and took place in Guangzhou, China.

During the first day of presentations and panel discussions, experts from the EU Observatory and other EU and China copyright organisations discussed the latest online and digital trends. As well as other issues, this included broadcasters’ rights, public performance, online enforcement and copyright management including collective management, licensing and government regulation.

During a lively panel discussion and Q&A session, the experts debated topical copyright issues including jurisprudential developments, the right of making available and digital music markets in the EU and China. The mix of panelists from universities, the music industry, broadcasting, internet platforms, CMOs and government organisations made for a highly engaging event.

On the second day, EU and Chinese experts were accompanied by IP Key China and the NCAC on a field visit to Guangdong Radio and Television station where they met with company officials who delivered presentations on the latest techniques to manage copyright of their services.

Guangdong Radio and Television is a major Chinese radio and television network. During the visit, EU and Chinese experts were given a tour of the new media center where the broadcasting network is overseen and later had the opportunity to discuss copyright issues with company representatives. Topics discussed included technology driven copyright management and broadcasting and public performance rights challenges across different media formats.
