The 23rd meeting of the EU-China IP Working Group was held on 14 January at the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM) in Beijing. Established in 2005 at the EU-China Summit, the group was set up to support the EU-China IP Dialogue. Earlier this year, the IP Key China team commissioned a study to look at how applicable the memorandum of understanding approach might be to the online anti-counterfeiting drive in China. The resulting study, which was unveiled on 21 November 2019 in Haikou, draws on over 30 surveys and in-depth interviews conducted with businesses and authorities in the EU and China as well as legal cases where the China e-Commerce law has been applied. Today, the EU and China concluded the negotiations on a bilateral agreement to protect 100 European Geographical indications (GI) in China and 100 Chinese GI in the EU against imitations and usurpation. Wednesday, 23 January, IP Key China held its 2019 Annual Appreciation Dinner at the TRB Copper to gather EU and Chinese stakeholders. During Dinner, Ulrich Weigl, Head of Trade Section to the Delegation of the European Union to China, and Jiang Chenghua, Deputy Director General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the PRC Ministry of Commerce, gave a speech to celebrate the past cooperation and mark the beginning of a new year. IP Key China partnered with the Law School of South China University of Technology to hold an IP Café, part of a series of events from IP Key China, entitled IPR PROTECTION FOR THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY.
