Public consultation: Revision of the EU GI systems

The European Union protects more than three thousand names of agricultural products and foodstuffs, fisheries and aquaculture, wines, spirit drinks and aromatised wine products, under one of its EU quality schemes: Geographical Indication (GI), Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG).

The European Commission has initiated a public consultation process (available in Spanish) on how to strengthen the GI system, the main challenges that should be addressed in the planned review, as well as its underlying causes, the different possible alternatives to address these challenges and the impact arising from the different alternatives, with the aim of understanding the views of national public authorities regional and local competent in the field of quality policy of the agri-food sector, organisations in the agricultural sector, the processing sector, consumers, the commercial sector, retail organisations, among others. Third countries may also participate in such consultation.

We will appreciate your participation in the questionnaire available by April 9, 2021.
