The EUIPO Organises a South-East Asia IP Mediation Conference in Manila

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) hosted the South-East Asia IP Mediation Conference in Manila, Philippines, from 11 to 12 November 2024, as part of its efforts to promote the use of mediation as a primary mode of dispute settlement in intellectual property (IP) cases.

Organised in the context of the IP Key South-East Asia (IP Key SEA) project, the conference brought together experts from the EUIPO Mediation Centre and the EUIPO Boards of Appeal, who led discussions on trends and developments in IP mediation, including best practices in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) procedures. Representatives from the IP offices of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam also shared their respective national mediation programmes and initiatives. Additionally, the conference included a session focused on developing the skills and strategies that make an effective IP mediator, such as communication, listening, and validation skills.

The EUIPO’s commitment to promoting IP mediation is reflected in this conference, which aimed to contribute to the improvement of IP mediation services in Southeast Asian countries. By enhancing IP mediation services, the EUIPO seeks to support EU businesses in resolving IP disputes in the region in a fair, efficient, and cost-effective manner.

As a leading IP agency, the EUIPO is a key advocate of mediation, and its mediation centre and Boards of Appeal work together to provide both judicial review and ADR options. This approach offers flexibility in dispute resolution and encourages amicable settlements whenever possible.
