IP Key LA and INPI France hold GI online seminar for Latin America

The European Union and Latin American countries have strong ties when it comes to agri-food products. The agricultural sector plays a strategic role in both regions, which demands adequate IP protection, especially regarding geographical indications (GIs).

In an effort to promote potential new ways of working together to enhance our markets, IP Key LA, together with the French National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and the French National Institute of Appellations of Origin (INAO), organised a GI online seminar. It was open to representatives of the competent institutions in charge of GIs and to GI producers in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

To present EU best practices in the field of GIs, the event included interventions from the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac, the Association pour l'IG Porcelaine de Limoges and the Comité interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne (CIVC). From the Latin American region, experts from the Colombian Federación Nacional de Cafeteros and the Mexican Consejo Regulador del Tequila shared their experience and the lessons learned in the long process of being recognised as a protected GI.

The event also included institutions and authorities who work in IPR enforcement and the fight against counterfeiting. They highlighted the need for more training, resources and worldwide coordinated efforts to improve the effective protection of GI products on international markets.
