Online Workshop: Industrial Design Examination

Over 100 intellectual property (IP) examiners and officials from 16 Latin American nations met online on 12-13 March 2024 to participate in a training session on industrial design examination. Organised with the AL-INVEST Verde DPI cooperation project, the event aimed to strengthen the skills of IP registrars with a focus on industrial design examiners.

During two intensive days, participants received instructions from experts from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) who shared methodologies and procedures used in design and model examinations. Key issues were addressed, such as registrability requirements, dual protection through industrial designs and copyright, and the creative aspects of technological designs, including graphical user interfaces and icons.

The leaders of AL-INVEST Verde DPI and IP Key Latin America opened the event (Mariano Riccheri and Carlos Azorín, respectively), who highlighted the importance of international cooperation on IP. Various thematic sessions led by EUIPO experts Carlos Mateo and Mar Portillo (Operations Department, Design Examination) focused on practical examination cases, the relationship between design and other IP rights, as well as the invalidity of designs and their relationship with uniqueness and novelty.

The attendees’ active participation and knowledge exchange highlighted the success of this specialised training. Its closure reaffirmed the continued commitment of the parties involved in raising IP awareness in Latin America.

The speakers’ presentations and video sessions from both days are available below.
