Leaders from Latin America and the European Union met at the Regional Conference on Geographical Indications

From September 22nd to the 24th, in Jalisco, Mexico, leaders from 16 Latin American countries, together with authorities from European Union organizations, participated in the Regional Conference on Geographical Indications. Being this event one more effort by IP KEY LA to promote dialogue between the two parties, in order to implement the best practices and policies in the region.

Institutions such as the Commission's Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Delegation of the European Union in Mexico gave lectures and debates on the matter. From Latin America, organizations such as the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), the Court of Justice of the Andean Community, the Tequila Regulatory Council, as well as the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation, participated among others.

The priority and main theme of the presentations (which were carried out in face-to-face format and virtual), was about strengthening the culture of geographical indications as an instrument of commercialization and socioeconomic development.

After two days of these top-level conferences, the speakers and guests held a study visit to the area of ​​Tequila, Jalisco, as a successful case of best practice in geographical indications.
